For the first time, female wrestlers had the same opportunities as male wrestlers to compete for their own state championship.
Over 120 girls from around the state competed at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro in the first-ever MPSSAA Girls State Wrestling Championship, including 14 girls from Baltimore County Public Schools.
Sign up for our Newsletters'I was scared. I was feeling everything,' said Beauty Heavena Tejan Cole. 'I don't think I'm a typical 17-year-old. A typical 17-year-old doesn't like to wrestle boys on a daily basis.'
She's OK with that. She's proud of what she's doing.
'They're really about women power. She's showing that women can dominate too. It's not just men,' Cole said.
Being part of Maryland wrestling history was a big deal. Going into the event, Cole had a record of seven wins and only two losses. Against other girls, she is 5-0, meaning she has also held her own against the boys with two wins and two losses.
'She's a go-getter. She wants it. She's got that passion, that drive that most boy wrestlers, that you want to see in your boy wrestlers,' said wrestling coach Ken Berlett Jr.
Wrestling is a passion for Cole. She said it's her favorite of all the sports she plays. But when she started her freshman year, it was out of necessity. It was a way to deal with her anger.
'Growing up, I always got bullied. I always a sensitive child,' Cole said. 'I got in this fight and the principal was, like, 'I don't want you fighting. You're a good student.' She was, like, 'You should wrestle,' Cole said.
'I've learned to breathe in. Wait until practice. Take it out at practice,' she said.
Her control comes in handy for the victories and losses on the mat, especially for the state championship.
'You made it there. It's a fantastic accomplishment. I mean, to be in the first-ever girls' state championship final. It's huge. It's going to be there forever,' Berlett said.

'I replayed the match a few times in my head. I got my tears out, I got myself together. And I'm like, 'OK, next year, I really have to come back next year and work for it. Really work for it,' Cole said.
