A South Riding man has been charged with the sexual assault of a woman he met through an online dating website, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

John Swann Evans, 34, met the victim, a 37-year-old Loudoun County woman, on E-Harmony in June 2010, according to police. In July, police said, the two met for the first time at the suspect's home, where Evans held the victim against her will and sexually assaulted her.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Kraig Troxell said that the two had conversed over the internet and possibly over the telephone prior to their first meeting.

The victim reported the assault on July 12, Troxell said, and Evans was taken into custody on Sept. 3.

Evans, charged with abduction with intent to defile and forcible sodomy, is currently being held at the Loudoun County Detention Center, Troxell said.

Troxell said that information gathered by police during the course of their investigation has led to concern that there may be other victims who have not come forward.

Anyone with knowledge of someone who may be a victim is encouraged to contact Investigator Bobbie Ochsman of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division at 703-777-0475.

I've never used an online dating site, but isn't it advised that you always meet in public first? Anyway, that's no excuse for what he did. I'm just curious about the usual protocols. I know the woman regrets ever answering his ad.

Sorry to hear this happened to this woman, but it seems to me she should take some blame. Why on earth did she meet him at his house? That is just plain nuts.

Let me make sure I have this straight:

This woman met a man online, probably had a few conversations, then WENT TO HIS HOUSE ALONE for a first meeting?

And she's 37? Not 16?

I'm not saying she got what she deserved - no one deserves to be raped - but had she used some common sense, the rape would never have happened.

Ok, she's s-t-u-p-i-d.
He raped her.
Stupid is NOT a crime.
Rape IS a crime.
Are we clear now?

How long until she hits E-Harmony with the expected lawsuit? 1 week? 2 weeks? This Friday?

Exactly WHAT is your problem?

Like it or not, the woman brought this on her SELF. It's hard to believe a 37 year old woman was so naive.

Sure, rape is a crime and I hope that sorry excuse for a man goes away for a long time. But she brought it on herself.

And all the smart-mouth prattling in the world won't change that.

I hope THAT clears it up.

Now have a happy landing.

Honestly it's smart to meet in a public place and to do background searches in this day and age. Also, you should use that gut instinct before even going to someone's house, go back to the old way of doing things and wait several months if not a year to go to somoeone's house alone.

Sorry this happened but naivete has to go at about 25 years of age.

There are a bunch of creeps on these dating websites, but you have to fish through the riff raff as you could meet a creep on the street, through friends or in a restaurant.

I have never used E-Harmony but I read an article where they tend to reject many profiles for whatever reason. Do you think this guy should of been rejected E-Harmony? In the report after the incident an E-Harmony spokesman said they will now delete his account duh

Imagine that...someone on the internet isn't who they say they are! Hard to believe...
Honestly, no woman deserves to be raped but how stupid could she be?
Lock him up and throw away the key but people need to demonstrate more common sense.
Married for 21 years this stuff is all foreign to me but I simply can't see the logic in meeting someone who is essentially a stranger any place other than in public.

I wonder if she was overly trusting because of the reputation of E-Harmony fpr screening its applicants? And perhaps the notion that only 'good' people go to E-Harmony in the first place?! Certainly brings to mind the phrase 'caveat emptor.'

Is it possible that Evans attaches a photo of Errol Flynn with his online come-ons?

A female would have to be blind, crippled or crazy [maybe all three] to submit to such a stomach-turning man's, uh, blandishments.

I know canines that are more attractive than the photo accompanying this piece.

[No, I'm NOT referring to Sarah Jessica Parker!]

6thsense79, what an even more idiotic response.

There are TWO people responsible here. That's the FIRST thing Evan's lawyer will bring up in court. You might not like it, but that's the reality.

Deal with it.

Well what did she expect? Online 'dating' sites are generally used for hook-ups if anything else. He was in the wrong, but I'm sure he was expecting something and got crazy when she backed out.

I find it very interesting that, despite the clear differences here, you are all jumping to the same conclusion. That Evans is guilty. This is America, folks, just because he's ugly and has been accused, he is presumed (at least by the courts) to be innocent until proven guilty. The critical issue is consent. She chatted with him on-line, maybe talked over the phone and went to his house. The article does not indicate when she reported the ALLEGED assault, but you don't get the impression that she walked out his door and dialled 911.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and bet that his lawyer is going to argue that she consented and had buyer's remorse some time later. More shockingly, I'm going to suggest that it is at least possible that it's true at that this poor schlep is innocent and his life has now been ruined by a stooopid woman, an overeager PC police force and a libelous article in the Washington Post.
